Young & Restless in Kuala Lumpur

While the big enterprises are expanding their businesses, there are newcomers storming into the fashion retail business. Every now and then, you will get surprised and amazed with interesting finds in unexpected places. In Malaysia, a few fashion designers have made the country proud such as Jimmy Choo , Khoon Hooi and Zang Toi. Recently I have made a few discoveries in the Kuala Lumpur that is quite surprising. Besides the fact that they are found here in Kuala Lumpur, these shops are special in their own ways.

If there is Wut Berlin, there is Lah Lah Land, a concept well put together by 2 young stylists-turned-entrepreneurs. Their own fashion trend speaks for the character of the store. If you are forward thinking, open minded and you dare to be different (not defined by the norm) with a love for fun fashion and strong colours, this small-space store will speaks your language! It is a challenge to find this shop for first-timers! Lah Lah Land is located on the 6th floor of Sungei Wang, separated by 2 level of carparks on the 4th and 5th.

Never Follow Suit, will surprise you in many ways.  Opened in May 2011, the store is a collaboration between 4 designers and stylists.   Tucked on the 2nd floor of a shop house in Bangsar Village, the entrance of their stairs immediately sets the mood and character of the store. Never Follow Suit has 4 distinctive sections.  Opening the door, we will see a variety of vintage clothes hanging in disarray. The front section displays Man & His Woman, Never Follow Suit’s main line, which is monotone and feels very much like Ann Demeulemeester décor.  On the other section, you will see a different mood of colourful clothing by Never Follow Suit.  The surprise ends at the chill out area which are littered with hundred of books.

See Through is multi label concept store which houses fresh & indie designer labels from Southeast Asia. With a passion for fashion, Calvin Cheong started his underground label ” AvantGOD” in 2009 and founded See Through. With 2 shops in KL, the latest addition is in a spacious shophouse in Bangsar, directly opposite Never Follow Suit.  The weaving structure made of white plastic splashed across the shop is simple yet effective. Stocking other than See Through clothing line, you will find a variety of clothings by other Asian designers.

Put them all together, the owners of the 3 stores are run by a creative bunch who are former/present fashion or hair stylists.  Naturally, their shop clientele are supporters of the stylists and alike.
