When Design Is BEAUTIFUL

Vanity is a complicated, confusing, and convoluted topic. To say that it is superficial or shallow is a complete misnomer. Currently worth $330 billion globally, millions of buying decisions are made every day within the beauty industry. To ease the angst of aging and appeal to vanity, beauty companies are relentlessly amassing their arsenal of beauty products with ‘innovative’ formulas, relaunched product lines with revamped packaging, limited edition product packaging plastered with cheap fancy stickers and so on.

In times like these, respect and kudos goes to MAC for getting it right time and again. Since 2006, MAC indulges in an annual couture collection of make-up, featuring its bountiful of luxurious boxes and tubes. Not only is MAC renowned for creating quality products, they are also popular for their incredibly chic product designs. In the couture collections, MAC invests in the product packaging from a designer creative, which includes new and one-off factory molds to worthy materials such as heavy metal casings.

And for the first time in MAC’s history, the designer behind the luxe couture collection packaging is made known: Marcel Wanders – the Dutch industrial designer behind the Knotted Chair and Moooi. Styled after his signature classicism-meets-futurism look, the jet black MAC-ware takes on the form of a slick jewel cut.

At this point, one can only wonder what the next couture collection will bring about from MAC’s excellent track record. So the question now is: what next?
