Alan Lim holds true to his belief that nothing is impossible. Always brimming with ideas, Alan is a photographer who has the eye and ability to visualize concepts in a fresh and exciting way. Upon graduation from The Art Institute of Florida, Alan was attracted to the fast pace of the newsroom and joined The Straits Times in 1997. Ever since then, he has produced many images and works that won him several local and international awards, including the WAN-IFRA and Lucie awards.
In 2009, he set up the Alan Lim Studio to continue what he does best – turning a piece of white paper into a canvas of limitless possibilities. Most recently, Alan founded the School of Photography in Singapore to share his experience and knowledge will all photography lovers.
What is your story?
When I was about six years old, I found a camera in the kitchen cabinet by chance and was so fascinated by it, it became my toy.
How long have you been doing photography?
I have been doing photography for 22 years, and shooting professionally for 16 years.
To be a good and qualified photographer, does one need a professional certificate or academic study?
I feel that a good and qualified photographer does not need a certificate to prove his/her capabilities. However, going through some formal training is always good. Foundation is important for all structures – if it is weak, it will only be a matter of time before the building collapses.
What is your area of specialization in photography?
I love conceptual photography such as fashion and portrait and also street photography.
Is winning an awards important?
It depends on how one looks at importance.
What inspires you?
Nature. Nature teaches me the various aspects of life where in photography; light is a part of nature.
Which is more important; skills, talent or the camera?
Skill is important because it is useless to own a hammer if one does know how to use it.

Build your foundation by attending a basic photography course or even contact the School of Photography Singapore.

Henri Cartier-Bresson and Steven Mesiel.
