The Projector, a hidden gem of an old school cinema at Golden Mile Towers

When one mentions Golden Mile Tower, one may inevitably confuse it with its neighbouring building, Golden Mile Complex (or more affectionately known as Little Thailand). Unlike its neighbour, Golden Mile Tower is definitely quieter and less lively. However, what many may not know is that on the 5th floor of Golden Mile Tower, lies a revamped cinema space named The Projector.

From the very moment you step out of the elevator, you will find yourself immersed in a room full of nostalgia and wonder.

Yes, the Projector is undoubtedly the highly Instagram-worthy place that one would not hesitate to immediately upload onto their Insta stories. In other words, their aesthetic game is very, very strong.

Even then, the projector isn’t just another hipster enclave or the next big buzz in town. In fact, the historic Golden Theatre- once the largest cinema in Singapore during the 1970s used to grace this space. Currently, it is an independent cinema and creative platform that offers a list of specially curated films ranging from indie, foreign, cult favourites, classics, art house, horror and local flicks.

Ultimately, what makes The Projector worthy of a visit lies in the uniqueness of the film watching experience that is hard to find anywhere else.

The Foyer at The Projector

When you first enter the theater, you don’t find cushioned velvet seats that we are used to seeing in our mainstream cinemas. Instead, you will find old school style, upholstered chairs which almost makes you feel like you have just stepped into the past.

Additionally, films screened at The Projector are also incredibly unique and diverse. Whether they are Wes Anderson classics, Film Festival line-ups, recent Oscar winners or movies that are no longer showing in mainstream cinemas. You no longer need to find yourself scouting the internet for dubious ways to stream movies or resort to re-watching the trailer on Youtube over and over again for The Projector will definitely satisfy your movie fix.

Did I also mention that the Projector also houses a Golden Bar serving popcorn, coffee, draft beer and other delectable treats such as Salted Egg fries and Kaya Scones! Because come on, let us be honest here did you really go the cinema if you did not grab a bunch of snacks to munch on!

In the age of “Netflix and Chill”, where we can binge watch our favourite movies and dramas from the comforts of our own home. A place like The Projector is a refreshing alternative, reminding us of the joys of an authentic cinema going experience.

You do not necessarily have to be a film buff to be able appreciate this space because whether you are into films or not, one cannot deny that The Projector provides a temporary respite from the hustle and bustle of our city lives, letting us escape into the realm of nostalgia and imagination.

The next time you find yourselves cracking your heads for something to do, consider paying The Projector a visit because it is not every day that you get to immerse yourself in an experience that only The Projector provides.
