The EcoChic Design Award 2013 – Finalists!
The EcoChic Design Award is a sustainable fashion design competition challenging emerging fashion designers to create mainstream clothing with minimal textile waste. The 2013 cycle is open to designers in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, France, Belgium and Germany. On 4 December 2013, Redress did a fashion shoot of the finalists’ designs at luxury hotel Upperhouse in Hong Kong. Styled by Denise Ho and photographed by Tim Wong, the photoshoot was of each finalist’s minimal waste designs that they will show on the runway during the grand final fashion show on 15 January 2014.
It was the Denise’s first time working with Redress and she was impressed by all the designs of the emerging sustainable fashion designers. “The idea behind it, to use waste to create something that is so special,” enthused Denise, “I really love the idea of it.”
We were also impressed by how ensuring their designs were sustainable did not hinder the designers’ creative streak. If anything, it seemed to enhance their designs, with the designers thinking outside the box, mixing and matching materials from second hand clothes. Here are some of our favourites:
Designed by Karen Jessen, Germany Finalist
You’d never guess that this intricate piece was reconstructed from second hand jeans and production surplus of black t-shirts. “The construction is very precise,” commented Denise. It beautifully accentuates a woman’s silhouette and adds a sexy touch with the lace ups at the sides.
Designed by Catherine Hudson, UK Finalist
Catherine Hudson ingeniously made this using a zero waste technique, i.e a design technique that eliminates textile waste at the design stage. We love the explosion of colours – perfect to make a statement!
Designed by Phee Ng, Singaporean finalist
It is “very couture-ish,” according to Denise. The top was made from scraps of second hand clothing, and the abstract geometric bottom from 6 pairs of jeans. In fact, this Singaporean finalist’s design reminds us somewhat of a peacock, which is fitting seeing how peacocks are often spotted at Sentosa!
