Street-style Photographer series | Nicholas
We’ve always heard that the grass is always greener on the other side. But how close is the other side? For this installment of our street-style photographer series, we move on just a little across the causeway. Based in Malaysia, Nicholas is no stranger to street-style photography.
More than just a blog documenting street-style, Nicholas shares his honest opinions and ideas of fashion as well as his occasional splurges. Just browsing though his site, you’ll be sure to get a little taste of who Nicholas truly is. We must say, this is a man who definitely has taste. It doesn’t get any more real than this.
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Nicholas, I’m 27 years old and I’m simply a normal guy who loves fashion and photography.
How long have you been taking street-style photographs?
It has only just been over a year now since I started garbagelapsap.com.
What draws you to take a photograph of someone?
It is usually someone’s style that attracts me to approach them – typically it’s not what you wear but how you wear it.
Do you have any tricks to get people to relax when shooting them?
When I first started garbagelapsap it was pretty tough because Asians are quite shy and they probably thought I was a weirdo. However when my site became more established, it became easier and people were happier and delighted to have their photo taken when I approach them.
What are your favourite places or street corners for spotting and shooting your stylish subjects?
It can be anywhere but I usually prefer flea markets or areas outside shopping malls.
You have been to various countries to shoot people on the street, which country has been the most inspiring to you so far and why?
I really enjoy shooting in Malaysia and Singapore the most. Although our style can be a little laid-back sometimes, style is indeed in our genes, even if it’s a more subtle and slightly simpler take on everyday fashion.
How is your street-style blog different from others?
I feel that my site is honest, independent and unbiased.
Do you remember the first great photo you took?
Yes I do! After taking that photo I told myself that I am going to continue to do this for a very long time and never to give it up.
Share with us how you think someone can take a good fashion photoIt’s not really much on the technique or equipment but you must have passion and a good eye for fashion.
What is a wardrobe staple for you?
You can never go wrong with a pair of skinny jeans!
If there were something you would consider a timeless trend, what would it be?
To me a white T-shirt and a pair of washed out jeans and aviator sunglasses are timeless!
Are there any current projects/exhibitions that you are working on? If yes, what are they?
I recently ran a photo exhibit with Camera Club in Australia. It was great!
What are your plans for Garbagelapsap.com in the near future?
I will continue to take more photos of fashionable people around the world and discover fresh and new street trends.
