Singapore Guide | Music – The Sam Willows

The Sam Willows

Genre: Country-folk

About: The Sam Willows was formed by siblings Ben and Narelle Kheng, and friends Sandra Riley Tang and Jon Chua. Bursting onto the Singapore music scene in May 2012 with their luscious harmonies and special brand of country-folk, The Sam Willows created a solid buzz across the island-state.

Since then, they’ve amassed more than 320,000 views on their YouTube page, which they keep stocked with the freshest originals and re-imagined covers. The quartet’s self-titled freshman EP was co-produced by esteemed local arranger Bang Wenfu, recorded and mixed at Soundfarm Studios and was mastered by Gene Grimaldi of Oasis Mastering, Burbank, CA. It was released to rave reviews on 27 October 2012 at their sold-out album launch party. Drawing inspiration from acts like Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, Joss Stone, Keith Urban and the sound of a leaky tap, they craft an interesting country-folk sound interlaced with heavy vocals.
The Sam Willows are supported by Warner Music Singapore, SHURE, Gibson Singapore and Wing Tai Asia. They were also Gibson’s Artist of the Month, October 2012; local radio station 987FM’s Rising Star (January 2013); and the winners of the m:idea Youth Choice Award 2013 in the band category. The Sam Willows have gone on their “No Sleep Til’ North America Tour” at the end of March 2013, playing iconic venues in Los Angeles, CA, as well as two major festivals – South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival 2013 in Austin, TX, as well as the Canadian Music Festival in Toronto, ON. We’re rubbing our hands in anticipation to see what else this group has to offer!

Why we love The Sam Willows: There is nothing we love more than a local band jamming to country-folk tunes, with bands such as Of Monsters and Men and The Lumineers as their influences. We also love how each of their voices harmonize together in perfection during their performances. Simply impeccable.
