Singapore Biennale 2016 Opens with ‘An Atlas of Mirrors’
Coming back for the fifth time this year, Singapore Biennale is bound to surprise you. Organised by Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and commissioned by the National Arts Council of Singapore (NAC), Singapore Biennale 2016 will be opened to the public from 27 October 2016 till 26 February 2017.
Titled ‘An Atlas of Mirrors’, the Singapore Biennale examines the challenges of the region’s contemporary conditions and positions Southeast Asia as the vantage point from which the world can be pictured anew. The works presented will draw on the diverse artistic viewpoints that trace the migratory and intertwining relationships within the region and reflect on shared histories and current realities with East and South Asia.
Bringing you fifty-eight spectacular artwork presentations from sixty individual artists and three artist collectives across nineteen countries and territories, such as Bui Cong Khanh (Vietnam), David Chan (Singapore), Chou Shih Hsiung (Taiwan), Subodh Gupta (India), Niranjan Rajah (Malaysia/Canada), it is one of Asia’s most exciting contemporary visual art exhibitions.
These artworks respond to the title of ‘An Atlas of Mirrors’ and explore notions of space, time, memory, nature, boundaries, agency, identity, displacement and absence. There are a total of nine conceptual zones throughout the exhibition namely —
Space: An Everywhere of Mirrorings
Time: An Endlessness of Beginnings
Memory: A Presence of Pasts
Nature: A Culture of Nature
Boundaries: A Shade of Borders
Agency: A Breath of Wills
Identity: A Flow of Identities
Displacement: A Somewhere of Elsewheres
Absence: A Past of Absences
This exhibition is extended to eight different venues: Singapore Art Museum, SAM at 8Q, Peranakan Museum, Asian Civilisations Museum, The Art House, Singapore Management University, National Museum of Singapore and Stamford Green.
There will also be an Opening Weekend Programme from 27 to 30 October consisting of artists performances and special programmes like the Artist and Curator Tour and Artist Insights series.
“An Atlas of Mirrors references the atlases and mirrors that have been instrumental in humankind’s exploration of the world as we navigate and map our journeys into the unknown. It is hoped that the evocative title, which guided its curatorial direction, would intrigue and inspire audiences to explore and experience the many ways of seeing our world and ourselves. Each mindfully presented artwork offers a unique encounter: we are invited to share imaginative and critical perspectives of artists from Southeast, South and East Asia, who are grappling with everyday contemporary realities, double-edged legacies, as well as the recurrent ‘big ideas’ and poetic metaphors that reflect the human condition.” – Dr Susie Lingham, Creative Director, Singapore Biennale 2016
