Sigur Rós Live in Singapore | Concert Review
Epic, Flawless, Spectacular.
No words are enough to describe Sigur Rós sold-out debut concert in Singapore last weekend. The Icelandic ambient rockers took the 9000 strong audience in Fort Canning Park on a trip to a magical realm of surreal beauty with the ethereal sound of their breathtaking music.
Opening the show with the hauntingly beautiful “Lagið Í Gær”, the crowd burst into a cheer as soon as Jon ’Jónsi’ Por Birgisson sang the first words to the song with his perfect-pitch falsetto voice, in a language mix of Icelandic and ‘Hopelandic’. ‘Hopelandic’ is a made-up language with no semantic meaning that is unique to the band.
The setlist for the show was a perfect mix of songs from all their albums, with the band belting out the crowd favorite tunes such as the celebratory “Hoppípolla”, “Festival” and dreamy “Svefn-G-Englar”, keeping songs from their new album ‘Valtari’ at a bare minimum. The atmosphere in Fort Canning Park was intense with their music that was accompanied with amazing visuals and lighting, which illuminate the stage in a dreamlike manner. Hands down, Sigur Rós really know their way around in captivating our hearts as they brought their fans on an emotional rollercoaster ride throughout the show.
In between the first song of their encore, it started to drizzle and a close friend of mine squealed in delight stating that her Sigur Rós experience would be complete if it rained. Within seconds into their last song, the sky was touched with their beautiful music and it rained! People whipped out umbrellas and donned ponchos almost immediately, not wanting anything to be in the way between them and “Popplagið”.
A stunning soundtrack and an ideal weather to end the surreal concert; Perfect.
Glimpses of strangers smiling at their friends were seen as they enjoyed the rain on their faces as the music of Sigur Rós slowly makes its exit. Sigur Rós ended the show with a long humble bow to their fans who braved the rain to catch their ambient/post-rock heroes from Iceland.
Takk Sigur Rós, for a magical evening!
