It’s Holiday Time, Destination: Thailand!
It’s that time of year when everyone is looking for a getaway from the hectic city life, if you ask me I’m in that mode every week. One of the most popular destinations in Asia is Thailand. Known for it’s beautiful islands, exquisite food and marvelous shopping there’s something for everyone in Thailand. We spoke to Raena Shah, founder of the bespoke luxury travel company Over The Rainbow for advice on traveling to Thailand.
What’s the best season to visit Thailand?
The weather on the Islands in Thailand is pretty predictable which is great. May to October it tends to rain heavily, though the east coast of Thailand receives relatively lesser rainfall. Overall for the rest of Thailand December to April is great since the temperatures are not too high and you can enjoy clear skies on most days!
What are the top three islands for this year?
Definitely Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Phi Phi. Pick any one and you won’t come back disappointed from your holiday!
What are some of the adventure sports a tourist should try out?
Thailand’s white sandy beaches, clear waters, lush green forests provide ample opportunity for the thrill seeker. Bungee jumping, sky diving, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking trips, quad bike racing, elephant trekking the list is endless! Thailand truly has something to offer to all age groups. You could plan a fun filled adventure holiday for the entire family.
What is the local cuisine and shopping scene like on most of these islands and in Bangkok?
Delicious is the one word that describes the local cuisine on the Islands. From the freshest seafood to local favourites like Pad Thai,Green Curry, Thai food will definitely tickle your taste buds. All the vegetarians out there take heart-vegetarian food is gaining popularity and most restaurants will make to order almost anything you request for. But a word of Caution, Thai food is spicy so make sure you have a glass of water handy.
Shopping can be quite an adventure in Thailand. The islands are filled with small boutiques that sell everything from Flip flops, swim suits, sunblock, evening wear to some beautiful art. Make sure to leave some room in your bag for some amazing wood carvings, photo frames and hand made candles.
Where’s the best place to experience Bangkok’s famed nightlife?
Patpong has been synonymous with the famed Bangkok nightlife for over 2 decades. Go Go Bars jostle for space with vendors selling food, replica watches, handbags, and the usual touristy T shirts. You are sure to find a bargain here but remember the key word is BARGAIN! Bangkok’s nightlife has a reputation for being wild and rowdy. But at the same time it’s relaxed, safe, enjoyable and great fun!
What are some of the most famous city hotels in Bangkok?
The Lebua has recently shot to fame with the movie the Hangover 2. Lots of scenes from the movie have been shot here. The Banyan tree Bangkok, Intercontinental Bangkok, Shangrila,Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit .
If one only has a 5 day holiday where should they go?
I would definitely recommend spending a day in Bangkok. The other 4 days spend on an Island. Koh Samui if you are looking for an Island holiday with a party scene .Koh Tao if you want a Robinson Crusoe type of experience, Khaolak if you are looking for world class diving/snorkeling sites..Traveling in Thailand is relatively easy and there are daily flights connecting the bigger Islands to Bangkok.
