People in the world | Melanie Giles-Clapp

These days, many people find it hard to balance a career, family and still have time for themselves. Melanie Giles-Clapp on the other hand seems to have figured it all out. This half British and half Chinese beauty speaks a myriad of tongue-twisting languages (talk about talented!) on top of having an amazing business mind. If you are not convinced, this interview will definitely win and charm you over much faster that you can say ‘Sabai Sabai’.

Where do you live now and how long have you been living there?

I have been living in Bangkok for 12 years now (via Hong Kong, Bristol, London, Paris & Singapore)

I am the Director of Public Relations at my family-owned hotel, The Siam.  You can visit our website at www.thesiamhotel.com.

We heard you are multi-lingual! What are the languages that you are able to speak?

I am fluent in English, French, Cantonese, Thai, German, and Italian.

(I have kids!)

Which do you spend more time on; TV series, movies or books? Name three to five of your favourite titles.

1) The usual 3 books that are on the trot are The Reiki Bible  – for a serious read, I don’t Know How She Does It – for a fun read and Aleph – for a literary read.  My favourite authors are Hemingway, Kundera, Coelho, Nin & Nabokov.

2) I am madly addicted to the following TV series: LOST, Grey’s Anatomy, True Blood, The Tudors, Downton Abbey, The Borgias and New Girl

3) My favourite movies are Wizard of Oz & The Cook, The Thief and His Wife & Her Lover

Where should we stay on our visit to Bangkok?

I recommend The Siam which will be opening in June 2012! It is truly one of a kind. Our ultra luxury riverside hotel features the capital’s first pool villa including an ancient Thai house with the history of Jim Thompson, a Muay Thai boxing ring, a chemical free spa by Sodashi, verdant gardens and original antiques and artwork. The mentioned are designed by Bill Bensley and my Thaimerican rockstar hunny, Krissada Sukosol Clapp.

What is your favourite restaurant in Bangkok?

The Krua Apsorn is famous for its to-die-for crab omelette and crispy fried wings and Zanotti for the melt-in-your-mouth T-bone.

Which café in Bangkok would you recommend us to visit?

The Erawan Tea Room for tea-time Thai style and a serene moment of hush amidst the downtown rush.

Share with us some awesome stores in Bangkok.

I recommend the K. Chao’s for antiques  at soi Decho off Silom Road, Platinum Mall for 5 floors of wholesale madness at Petchburi Road and Siam Centre for local Thai designers  which is next to Siam Paragon Mall.

What is Bangkok’s best kept secret?

Bangkok’s best kept secret is definitely beef noodles on Pra Arthit Road with sour chilli sauce. I can eat 3 bowls!

We should visit your city because…

Of the good food, sunhine, amazing shopping, beautiful beaches, incredible spas, crazy capital and ridiculously nice people!

What are the last 3 cities that you visited?

Hong Kong (my hometown), Hua Hin and San Francisco.

Which city do you plan to visit next?

I plan to visit Istanbul on my way to Paris and London.

What do you do in your free time?

I love antiquing with my hubby, letting my kids loose at the zoo or  going to Lumpini Park and scoping out new street eats.

Describe your personal style.

Whimsical chic!

What is your life motto?

I strive to live by the 5 Reiki principles. Nobody’s perfect but if you focus on the present it is easier to succeed.

  1. Do not anger
  2. Do not worry
  3. Be humble
  4. Be honest in your work
  5. Be compassionate with yourself and others

Also, another challenge is to try approach everyone with love (esp. those who bother you most) and see what a difference it makes in your life!

Which would you choose; Android, blackberry or Iphone?

Clikety-clackety keyboards so android and blackberry. I have an Ipad and Ipod too, so I think that’s more than enough?

What are some of your favourite Ipad applications?

Kid’s applications are the best and the Beatrix Potter Ipad books are gorgeous!

Do you have a profile in any social media networks?

I ‘m in PR so I ‘Digg’ them all! FB, Twitter, Google +, LinkedIn, blogs x 2 as I manage The Siam’s social media too. I’m proud to be a multi-tasking career-mum extraordinaire!
