London Design Festival | Tent London


Tent London is one of the largest design trade shows taking place during the London Design Festival each September. Now in its 5th year and situated at the Old Truman Brewery, it presents over 200 exhibitors from 26 countries, showcasing the latest in contemporary interior products – including furniture, lighting, ceramics, textiles and accessories. There will also be shows and gallery events featuring digital and art installations, making the showcase an experience in itself.


Having attracted a crowd of over 19,000 people from buyers, media, to design savvy consumers, people from over 44 different countries attended this 4 day event held from 20-23rd September.


In the main tent, some of the highlights that we looked out for were: Hugarian design duo A+Z and their curiously quirky table and floor lamp Pillhead; Curiosa & Curiousa of the UK debuting their colorful drop lamps and chandeliers evocative of nostalgia tinted memories; gorgeously futuristic furniture pieces from Nobody&Co of Italy; and the timeless Rex chairs by Impaktales of Slovenia.


Tent Loves is a series of installations commissioned by Tent London, and features striking works by designers working in various unexpected materials. There is also a specially curated area by JJam Curators Collective with Tortie Hoare, Shell Thomas, Studio Henny van Nistelrooy, We Do Studio and Elena Corchero.


One designer to take note of is Pepe Heykoop of the Netherlands, who has created Leather Lampshades using soft lambskin, which intriguingly manages to look fragile and tough at the same time. Aesthetic appeal aside, each lampshade is also handmade by poor women living in the red light districts of Mumbai, thus helping create jobs for them. For each lampshade sold, the equivalent of one month’s school fees will also be donated to send their children to school.  


From cutting edge design to clever functionality and social consciousness, the exhibits at Tent London this year proved that designers have definitely got their fingers on the pulse of what consumers really want from their products.
