Free Market in Seoul
Seoul’s Hongdae district is famous for its cool artist vibe, hippie crowd and indie culture. This strip in front of Hongkik University is a popular hangout for artists.
Hongdae is my favorite area in Seoul. The place is surrounded with unique cafes, street performances, cool clothing stores and underground clubs. Strolling around the streets of Hongdae is like walking into an open art gallery because of the graffiti and colorful walls painted by Fine arts students from the nearby university.
For arts and crafts lovers, you guys might want to check Free Market while you are in the neighborhood. Every Saturday, artists, musicians, students and tourists gather around Hongdae for Free Market. People throng the cozy park near Hongkik University for an afternoon of live music, vintage finds and one-of-a-kind handmade crafts.
Free Market started in 2002 and although it is organized as a flea market, the market only sells genuine goods. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals not only for handcrafted items like jewelry, paintings and shoes. Visitors can also have their portrait drawn by university arts students for only 10,000 Korean won.
So if you’re planning on an artsy off-the-beaten-track trip to Seoul, be sure you don’t miss Hongdae’s Free Market. It is open every Saturday 1 to 6PM March to November.
