Dempsey Hill

Singapore is a volatile place with changes happening constantly.
Before you know it, new developments are popping up here and there on our tiny island.

A couple of years back, I remember being so proud when I brought guests to dine at Boat Quay. With more than 80 F&B outlets in old houses lined along the Singapore River,  Boat Quay is a beautiful place to dine and wine. And who can forget about The Opera Cafe? How i missed that place! Sidetrack aside, Dempsey Hill is one example of the amazing developments happening around us in recent years.

Dempsey Hill used to be the Central Manpower Base of Singapore and former army barracks for the British army.  Currently, it is now home to more than 50 dining and retail establishments including some of the best restaurants in town . Before this invasion, Dempsey Hill was only known to die-hard fans of  rustic antique furniture. In 2006, Singapore Land Authority opened up the area for commercial use. Many hungry entrepreneurs seize the business opportunity as land in our country is scarce and controlled. Over time, the area attracted many taste makers who desired to improve and transform Dempsey Hill; now making it one of the coolest places to visit in Singapore.

Many old colonial buildings were restored and new ones were added. Rich and tall tropical trees were planted around the buildings to create a vibe for those seeking a getaway from the city.  My favourite dining outlets in Dempsey Hill are a handful! For a taste of fusion delights where east meets west or just a hangout place for drinks with friends, I’ll definitely recommend PS Cafe. If you are in the mood for seafood, Long Beach Seafood restaurant and Jumbo Seafood will not disappoint you!  Being the oldest resident at Dempsey, Sammy’s Curry is a must-visit for those up for delicious indian delicacies.  Jones The Grocer is a great place to dine if you want to impress your date and if the other half is craving for dessert, Ben & Jerry’s or even House is just around the corner.
