Blueprint 2011 | Seoul’s 10 Soul

The inaugural Seoul’s 10 Soul, jointly organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Fashion Centre was one of the highlights of the 2011 Blueprint Tradeshow. The project seeks to provide exposure for promising Korean fashion designers and give them the opportunity to develop their talents under the international spotlight. Ten such designers were shortlisted and brought together to showcase their individual collections. The winner will subsequently receive the chance to start his or her own label in Paris.

By holding the event in Singapore as part of the Asia Fashion Exchange, Korea is taking steps to develop a consumer base here and make Singapore an integral partner in her effort to gain recognition in the global fashion industry. Our very own Actually has also been introducing Asian designers from as early as 2006, and has helped curate a strong following amongst the local trend-conscious. Korean designers command a fair share of the labels carried, with brands like Jain by Jain Song, Vandalist, Studio K, Fleamadonna and Heart to Cry On as just a few examples.

The brands introduced at Seoul’s 10 Soul included beyond closet, jardin de chouette, Kaal E. Suktae, and LEYII. While each exhibited a specific vision and very different designs, a common theme of minimalist chic and luxurious fabrics underlined each collection. The use of chiffon and silk was common and were set off beautifully when juxtaposed with stiffer designs as utilized in blazers and dresses.

The immaculately planned project also comprised of a cocktail party held abroad the Ion Sky, perched atop the very Mecca of Singapore’s shopping district. The party included a fashion show featuring the Korean designers’ latest works, Korean rice wine served in delicate champagne flutes, heart-thumping music, and flocks of sleek designers and fashion insiders who had all gathered to lend full support to the event. It was the perfect way to end off the Blueprint trade show and an enticing glimpse into what the Korea fashion industry has to offer.
