Actually’s Collaboration with Band of Doodlers

With our new Actually POP UP store opening event happening this Friday, 9 December, we are working with a group of talents to put up something spectacular. They are none other than the Band of Doodlers!

Band of Doodlers is a 200-strong doodling superhero team made up of artists with keen interests in doodling, drawing and illustration. They are “white space bandits” – on a mission to transform white walls to co-created works of fun.

We have collaborated with 5 of them: Mas Shafreen (Wanton Doodle), Dhanendra Poedjono (WALGDP.co), Panji Mardhika, Natalie Wee (Cloudhedd) and Marie Toh, to create a series of limited edition tote bags, in celebration of Actually’s 10th Anniversary.

Every tote bag is carefully designed and incorporates each of the individual artist’s style. There are a total of 5 different designs of tote bags for you to choose from, with only limited quantity available!

We also had the chance to interview the various artists, so let’s get close and personal with each of them!

MAS SHAFREEN

My name is Mas and I am a compulsive doodler. I am a corporate cog by day and vigilante doodler by night, with the dark eye circles and sharpie stained fingers to prove it. To help me rid the world of boring blank spaces, I have enlisted others on my crusade to form the Band of Doodlers.

2. When did you first have an interest in doodling and illustrating?

My mom never forgets to remind me that the doodling bug bit me when I was 2. She found me decorating her walls with picasso-esque characters using my preferred medium back then – bright red lipstick. This affliction to fill void with scribbled characters continued through my formative years, making textbooks more colourful, and adulthood, to help me survive mind-numbing meetings. Doodling is my anti-boredom.

3. How would you describe your style of illustration and doodles?

OCD meets LSD.

4. Where do you derive inspirations?

Anything and everything. I am always surprised by where and who will inspire me next. This is why I feel very strongly about collaborations because we can never be entirely sure about the outcome.

5. What do you do in your free time?

Between my day job, personal commissions and running Band of Doodlers, I barely have free time. However, I do religiously follow my team, Manchester United and I try to make time to make my snowboard pilgrimages.

6. If you could only have one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

For everyone to have empathy. If my wish was granted, I would not need to tell you why.

DHANENDRA POEDJONO

1. Tell me more about yourself.

My name is Dhanendra Poedjono, or just Dhan for easier and less tongue twisting pronunciation. I’m a full time graphic and digital publisher. I’m also a full time nerd…

2. When did you first have an interest in doodling and illustrating?

Since I was a kid. Watching cartoons and reading comic books really showed me that there are other kinds of art and style of drawing since most of my teachers back in primary school  said that “art” is only paintings. So I began to create my own characters in my own style to proof them wrong.

3. How would you describe your style of illustration and doodles?

Cartoonist and crowded.

4. Where do you derive inspirations?

I usually got inspirations mostly from video games and movies. But my biggest inspirations source came from my terribly talented friends… and I need to keep up.

5. What do you do in your free time?

I doodle, play video games and do some sports.

6. If you could only have one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

Hmm, probably the ability to speak all languages. Life will be so much easier when there’s no language barrier since communication is key.

PANJI MARDHIKA

1. Tell me more about yourself.

My name is Panji Mardhika (GG as my moniker), I’m a 21 years old Indonesian studying Graphic Communication in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Singapore. I love to wear wacky and crazy socks that does not match with my outfit.

2. When did you first have an interest in doodling and illustrating?

I’ve been interested in doing it since I was in primary school and I keep on doing creative works until today.

3. How would you describe your style of illustration and doodles?

I would say I have always been interested in drawing weird creatures and characters, and the people around me said that my artistic style lies somewhere in between strange and cute.

4. Where do you derive inspirations?

Random conversations, skateboarding, and conspiracy theories.

5. What do you do in your free time?

Skateboarding, taking pictures, and lots of internet surfing.

6. If you could only have one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

Ironman suit. Why? It’s an Ironman suit! Hahaha but realistically though, I’d have my camera. I have this fascination about how quickly time passes by and that’s just one of the way for me to pause the moment and re-lived it in the future.

NATALIE WEE

1. Tell me more about yourself.

I have a short attention span and get distracted really easily – the only time I can get fully engrossed in something is when I have a good fantasy/sci-fi novel in my hands, or when I’m creating an illustration that I’m really passionate about.

2. When did you first have an interest in doodling and illustrating?

Probably in primary school, when I used to draw on the last page of my Math exam papers after giving up on the hard questions.

3. How would you describe your style of illustration and doodles?

Detail-oriented, organic, introspective.

4. Where do you derive inspirations?

Leaves, cartoons, women and fantasy stuff like folklore, myths and legends

5. What do you do in your free time?

Besides the usual (being lazy, watching Steven Universe and Brooklyn 99 and stuffing my face with good food), I like trying out new creative methods so I don’t get stuck in a rut: recently I picked up dip-pen calligraphy after dabbling in it for awhile last year.

6. If you could only have one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

It would have to be a quaint 2-storey shophouse because it’s my dream to have my own creative studio where I can have the space to work freely, and where my future dogs can be with me while I work!

MARIE TOH

1. Tell me more about yourself.

Hello! I’m Marie. I enjoy storytelling and transforming them into narrative images. I’m currently freelancing as an illustrator and uses various mediums such as ink, digital, watercolour and even embroidery.

2. When did you first have an interest in doodling and illustrating?

Like many others, I’ve always liked drawing and art since young and started drawing the moment I could hold a pencil. I started taking illustration more seriously after I graduated, even though I was trained in animation, I marvel at 2D still visuals which can convey the same, if not more emotion and story than a moving image.

3. How would you describe your style of illustration and doodles?

I’m not very sure what my style is, but I like to juxtapose the calm beauty of nature and subtle fears we have to create something unique. I also really love the visual of plants and hair together.

4. Where do you derive inspirations?

I take inspiration from lots of things, such as Japanese aesthetic, to classic fairy tales, to horror movies to the little bits is surreal happenings in everyday life.

5. What do you do in your free time?

In my spare time, I love watching films, reading, embroidery and just chilling with loved ones.

6. If you could only have one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

If I could only do 1 thing in the world, it’d be to dive to the deepest end of the ocean and see what is hiding there (and not get eaten by it).

They will be live doodling on the wall at our new Actually POP UP store at Suntec this Friday. Mark the date down on your calendars and we will see you there!
