About A Girl: Cherie Ko

She’s not your ordinary girl. She has fabulous taste in music, and she’s dressed with impeccable style; unparallel to what is frequently seen on the streets these days. It’d be easy to think that girls like her are facing an endangerment – crisis alert!

Anyone who is familiar with ‘Obedient Wives Club’ would have known that she is one of the guitarists in the band. What you probably don’t know is that she’s a YouTube sensation in our region; a rising star that illuminates brightly on the shores of our little red dot. She must be doing something right because both of her YouTube accounts (talktothewalls & DropDeadKxy) span a total of 30,000 subscribers with over 6,000,000 views!

She had done covers from Beach House to Bombay Bicycle Club, and we don’t blame you for doubting the existence of fairies when you’re tuning in to her videos – mesmerized by her singing.

Meet Cherie Ko, the ‘Princess of Chillwave’! Let’s hear what she has to say…

Hi Cherie! Tell us about yourself.

Hi! I am 21 years old this year, and i currently study marketing at SIM (RMIT)

I am really into music (duh!), right now i really like dreampop, shoegaze, phil spector sounds & chill step. I’m also a little bit of a movie buff, with a penchant for films from the past – currently on a big 80s – 90s kick. In my free time, I spend a lot of time on the internet, finding out about new music, movies, and pop culture and this is where i draw most of my inspiration from.

Tell us how talktothewalls came about.

I came up with that username on a whim, doesn’t really mean anything. It was inspired by an Emery song – Walls. I was a huge post-hardcore fan a few years back, which explains it… Funny how my musical tastes have totally changed 180 degrees though!

You’re a YouTube sensation. How did that happen?

It didn’t happen overnight. It took a few years of song-covering to slowly build up my fan base and achieve what I have now. I wouldn’t exactly call myself a YouTube sensation though, because there are way more famous artists on YouTube, I’d consider myself a small fish in the big ocean.

Name one music artist that inspires you greatly – why?

My favourite band is Beach House, and they inspire me a lot. Their songs are deeply lyrical, and every song is filled with such emotion and paints such atmospheric soundscapes. There’s just something about their music that really speaks to me and touches my heart.

I saw your most recent work, and it was amazing! Please introduce to us – what is Pastelpower?

Thank you! Pastelpower is a one-girl electronic outfit consisting of yours truly which was formed one night while i was messing around with my keyboard. It is basically sugary, sweet, cotton candy in aural form! All of my songs are also very character-based and they are about imaginary people i make up in my head.

Do you write your own music for Pastelpower?

Yup, all of it!

What are the inspirations behind the track – Jean-Paul?

The song was named after Jean-Paul Belmondo, who was a famous french new wave actor in the 60’s. It’s simply a song about how dreamy he is.. But in my head i transformed him into a mailman because that makes him more reachable and attainable, and a girl can always dream right?

You’re a student, a guitarist in Obedient Wives Club, a YouTube star, and a singer with Pastelpower. I’m impressed at how you’re able to juggle between so many roles! How do you manage that? What are some of the difficulties you faced?
I’m surprised too! (laughs!) It sounds like quite a handful, but my schedule is not really as packed as it seems. It’s pretty manageable! I just have to make sure nothing clashes. Some of the difficulties would be neglecting my schoolwork.. I’m a big procrastinator and music can serve as quite a distraction sometimes cause it’s so much more fun than schoolwork. I’m still trying to overcome that difficulty…

Any advice for the young and budding creative talents out there who want to live their passion?
Just get out there and DO IT! Don’t be afraid of failure and criticism, because it really helps you grow and become better at what you do. Also, if you do not make use of your youth and do what you want to do, you’re going to regret it when you grow older cause opportunities do not come by easy. I mean, I’m 21 and i already feel like my time is running out! #YOLO!
