The idea of fine french dining in the capital city of China was not something that I would usually consider, but when a friend suggested a weekend brunch at Maison Boulud, something clicked and I said yes without any hesitation.

Maison Boulud in Beijing was the first restaurant opened outside of USA by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud. It is located in a former US Embassy during the Ching dynasty, a majestic and stately courtyard manor not too far away from the South Entrance of Tiannanmen Square.

We were greeted warmly by the front desk staff, and were asked to have a seat while they checked the seating status. Despite having no reservation, we were given a wonderful table, probably because it was past 2pm. Yes, the brunch menu goes well beyond the usual time, a nice touch.

Needless to say, the setting was perfect: high ceiling, natural light (streaming through the full length windows), large mirrors and stylish paintings. At the table, we had fresh flowers, white and crisp linens, spotless stainless steel cutlery, and crystal clear wine glasses.

The menu was quite impressive for brunch menu, not restricted by the now in trend buffet, salad, ala-carte main course and dessert. At Maison Boulud, one has a choice between a one to four course meal, all reasonably priced. Fresh bread and dips came in a flash, and what a bonus, the waiter kept giving us more and more as soon as they were gone without even being prompted!

Every dish was flawlessly executed, and they all came out perfectly synchronized. What’s more, they tasted as good as they looked.

Even though we were not planning on ordering dessert, we just could not resist, having seen the exquisite specimens of the delectable sweets on our neighbouring tables. So we ended up having lunch with dessert and coffee, plus a basketful of madeleines, compliments of Maison Boulud.
