We are photographers | Ivan Ho
Ivanho Harlim is an Indonesian-born, Singapore based photographer, who has established a strong name for himself with several fashion magazines. Through his fashion work, he explores notions of solitude, youth, self and tries to challenge the conventional perceptions of glamour and beauty. A regular contributor to local and regional magazines, Ivanho has shot for advertising clients such as Nike, Nokia and Levi’s. As a result of his unique photographic style, he has also been associated with the youth and music culture, leading to forming a long-term collaboration with designer, Woods & Woods.
What is your story?
I did an advertising course at RMIT in Melbourne. After graduation, I took a short course in photography at another school. I tried to work in advertising for a few months and decided that I am more suited for photography as it allows me to showcase my point of view.
How long have you been doing photography?
It has been 11 years now.
To be a good and qualified photographer, does one need a professional certificate or academic study?
What inspires you?
Many things inspire me. Everything from films, music, models to things that are around us like a chair etc.
What is your area of specialization in photography?
Fashion, since I do most of my work for fashion magazines.
Which is more important; skills, talent or the camera?
The answer is obvious, but it also depends if the camera is able to talk in the future which is very possible (i.e Siri).
Share one advice for an inspiring professional photographer
Start with assisting, it will open up more opportunities.
Which photographer/person do you admire?
I admire my parents for their work ethics.
