Top 5 Acts We Are Psyched For | Laneway Festival Singapore 2015
When St.Jerome’s Laneway Festival office in Australia announced their lineup for next year’s edition of the festival, our team members were ecstatic predicting which acts will be making their way to our shores. Some said Flying Lotus, Lykke Li and Banks are sure bound to be in the lineup for Singapore and then there were some who were convinced that St.Vincent would not be heading down here. I had most of my money on Mac DeMarco as he has been actively touring to promote his latest album, Salad Days, which was rated 83 out of 100 by Metacritic and of course, he is my favourite artist of 2014 (I am being biased here, my apologies)
After much consideration and a string of friendly disputes, our team finally settled on our top 5 favourite acts from the lineup that we are absolutely psyched to catch in January!
Noted for her eerily striking vocals, the magical BANKS continues to rise at meteoric pace. Since her breakout London EP, the L.A. native and blogger’s favourite has notched up a debut tour with The Weeknd and a BBC Sound of 2014 nomination, a breakout Coachella performance and a string of sold out shows around the globe. She dropped her “intensely compelling” and “remarkably seasoned” debut LP Goddess in September to rave reviews. Don’t miss her breathtaking debut Australian performance at next year’s Laneway Festival.
Australia’s favourite electronic crooner CHET FAKER returns to Singapore in 2015 (following Australasian and Detroit Laneway Festival dates in 2013). The Melbourne native has had a wildly successful year: certified Gold status in Australia for debut LP Built On Glass; a run of top tier overseas festivals (Lowlands, Melt!, Montreux Jazz and FYF festivals); and sold out headline dates across the globe, not to mention millions of YouTube and Soundcloud streams. Check out his live video for ‘1998’, filmed during his Aus tour in June/July.
POND, Perth’s foremost psych rock group are back to play Laneway in 2015. Led by musical wanderer Nick Allbrook (it’s his sixth Laneway in a row), the band comprises a revolving cast of members taken from Tame Impala, The Growl, The Silents and others. Over their five-year history, the band have released a series of albums (including the raved about Beards Wives & Denim and 2013’s Hobo Rocket) that redefine rock n roll. NME once called them the ‘The Hottest New Band In The World’ and they count as one of our favourites. Their new album Man, It Feels Like Space Again is set to be released on the eve of Laneway, making it the first showcase of their new music. No doubt their set will be as thrillingly explosive and unpredictable as ever.
LITTLE DRAGON are our favourite go-to group for sexy slow jams. The electronic quartet formed in a Swedish high school 15 years ago and have been winning over fans ever since. Frontwoman Yukimi Nagano’s delicate, distinctive vocal has appeared elsewhere (see: Gorillaz, David Sitek and most notably SBTRKT’s classic ‘Wildfire’) but their accomplishments surpass their A-list connections. This year, Little Dragon released their fourth LP Nabuma Rubberband that brought us jams ‘Klapp Klapp’, ‘Paris’ and ‘Let Go’ to critical acclaim and wooed Australian audiences with their super smooth rendition of Kelis’ ‘Millionaire’ on Like A Version earlier this year.
MAC DEMARCO (real name, Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV, we no lie) has a penchant for cheeky lyrics and a gap-toothed smile. After a succession of playful, buzzy albums, Canada’s most charming wild child released his third record Salad Days, which took a more serious turn despite plenty of oddball jams. DeMarco’s self-labelled style of ‘jizz jazz’ is groovy and melodic, and his live show will be fun, lewd and possibly a little nude. Plus! Mac is bringing his mum along for the ride. Agnes DeMarco joins the Laneway 2015 tour as resident MC, as revealed by Laneway founder Danny Rogers at September’s BIGSOUND.
