The Return Of EVA PERÓN
Probably the most impressive street manifestation of fashion in Argentina – more than two million people attended the funeral service of Eva Perón; in August of 1952. The main street avenues of Buenos Aires were fully packed with men wearing impeccable suits, regimental uniforms by hundreds, women wrapped with mink furs, berets, tailored skirts and peplum jackets; while a continuous rain of red roses, carnations and gladiolus covered her coffin. It was the final homage paid to the most powerful lady in Argentinean politics and style – dressed by Dior, Balenciaga and Fath among others.
After Eva’s death, her embalmed body sparked a science-fiction story; a tribulation itself for the past twenty years – kept into mysterious deposits, buried many times and traveled around the world with a pseudonym.
The story served as an inspiration to brand new Argentinean designer Marcelo Giacobbe, for his latest runway at Buenos Aires Fashion Week: “I chose Evita’s corpse, because she was a political-being and a woman – the mix between symbology and femininity seemed rotunda to me. Besides that, the idea of being perpetuated by the process of embalming was extremely hideous for me. In a way, it is like fashion that has many facets and it allows itself to be gelid and hideous.”
With this concept Giacobbe has worked with the forties and fifties era silhouettes: remixed tulip and mermaid lines for dresses, deconstructed suits and oversized ruffles as beautification for the garments: “The main topic of my creative process is the technical aspect of it. I am mainly interested on the construction of the piece, the search of an unknown shape. The start for me is sketching; illustration is my best friend, my private process of creation.”
