President’s Design Award 2013
Displayed at the National Design Centre, the President’s Design Award 2013 exhibitions stood out against the white walls, proudly proclaiming the award that they rightfully earned. These were the designs that have enhanced human potential and national competitiveness, moving beyond mere aesthetics. Looking at the exhibitions, it was no wonder that many who have been to Singapore have cooed over the beauty of our small country.
Established in 2006, the President’s Design Award is Singapore’s most prestigious design accolade. The Award recognises excellence across all design disciplines, including advertising design and visual communications, architecture and urban design, fashion design, furniture design, interior design, landscape design, product and industrial design. The Award is conferred by the President of the Republic of Singapore, and is jointly administered by DesignSingapore Council and Urban Redevelopment Authority.
An exhibition that I was surprised to see clinching the award was the Snapware Eco Flip. At first glance, it seemed like any other bottle. Upon reading the functionality, however, I was mentally applauding the bottle and thinking it was one of the best things since sliced bread. Snapware Eco Flip, a flip-to-drink bottle is made with comfort in mind. It allows easy one-handed operation, great for the physically challenged. The two-part cap system also lets it be disassembled for easy washing – no struggling to clean the inside anymore! And as the name suggests, it is eco-friendly – the negative footprint on the environment is minimal with its recyclable glass and long life span. It had also won the prestigious Australian International Design Awards’ “Good Design”.
The models of Gardens by the Bay, Satay by the Bay, Parkroyal on PICKERING and Lucky Shophouse let us appreciate the architecture and urban designs of said places. I was especially impressed by the model of Lucky Shophouse – the detail that went into the model was amazing. But if we were looking at the actual buildings, I’d have to say that Parkroyal on PICKERING takes the crown. Either way, all the winning designs were deserving of the award, and the same went for the designers who had earned the title “Designer of the Year”, which were
