People In The World

Anna Vecchi

City you live in now, how long have you been living there?

I have been going to Rochester Institute of Technology for graphic design in Rochester, NY for the past two years, but on my breaks from school I come back home to Tolland, Connecticut where I’ve lived all my life.

I am a full time student but I am a certified buyer at a store called Once Upon A Child, which is a second-hand baby/children’s store that pays cash for peoples items they wish to get rid of.

What languages do you speak?

I grew up only knowing Mandarin and Italian, thanks to my parents, but once I went to kindergarten in the U.S., I lost everything. However, I learned French in high school and plan on “re-learning” Italian soon.

Your mother tongue?

American English, but I wish I kept up with Mandarin and Italian.

Music you listen to now?

I literally listen to everything from Killswitch Engage to Kanye West and Kid Cudi. However, lately it has been a lot of Adele, Mumford and Sons, Lupe Fiasco, The Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, Mt. Eden, and the Tron Legacy soundtrack.

What do you think of Justin Bieber?

Oh Bieber fever…it’s crazy. However, the commercial that aired in the states featuring Pauly D “Biebered out” for Justin’s new movie was pretty amazing. Secretly I have his albums.

Your friends like you because…

I bring comedic relief to everything, and I’m not afraid to still be that little kid in public. Also, I’m always there if anyone needs anything, yet still remaining very strong in situations.

Your recommended hotels (in your city)

I honestly don’t know Rochester all too well but the Super 8 nearby is fantastic because that’s where my parents always stay when they come up and they love it. In Tolland we only have one place to stay and that’s the Tolland Inn, which is a typical farmhouse-style bed and breakfast place in the town green.

Your recommended restaurants (in your city)

In Rochester, I highly recommend Arigato for their unlimited all you can eat sushi for only 20 dollars a person, which is amazingly cheap. In Tolland, I recommend Papa T’s because it’s the typical family owned tiny pizza place that serves amazing food at a really affordable price.

Your recommended café (in your city)

Well there are no café’s in Tolland so the best café I know of in Rochester would be Java’s in downtown, which is amazing. It’s like a modern, retro, hipster Starbucks. They have all kinds of artwork literally covering the walls in crazy frames and have amazing little set ups for seating. They even have their own little tearoom with walls filled up of tea boxes. They have a smaller version on my campus that features student art as well.

Your city’s Best Kept secret (anything from places to food, or things normally tourist do not know)

Contrary to popular belief about Rochester’s grey-sky weather, it’s a very beautiful place. The old subways are great places to visit and take a look at and there’s a lot of art in Rochester. Tolland is a fantastic place to be in the fall because the leaves become every fall color imaginable; it looks like the tree line caught fire. It’s beautiful.

We should visit your city because …

Rochester’s actually fun! There are a lot of universities there so a lot of famous music artists come through to play at the colleges so tickets are fairly cheap. Hockey’s a big deal and there are some crazy unique foods, like the garbage plate. Google it. Tolland is a good place to visit just to get away from cities and crazy suburbs because we still maintain that farm town feel, which is why I love coming back home so much.

The last 3 cities you visited.

In the country (excluding the ones I live in), New Haven, CT. NYC. Boston, MA.

Which city you plan to visit next.

I’m probably feeling Boston because it’s more feasible for me. Also, a few of my sorority sisters that graduated and friends from high school live up there.

With the current community you are in, how do you stand out from the crowd?

Well I’m apart of a few communities, the Greek community on campus, the RIT community, graphic design community…but in whatever community I’m in at the time, everyone knows me as the crazy Chinese-Italian girl with snakebites who’s obsessed with anything animal print, pandas, and has a panda spirit hood.

Where is your hang out place?

Lately it’s been in my apartment on campus because I’ve been so busy doing so much work. Other than that, I usually am at my sorority house on campus. Back home in Tolland, my friends and I typically go bowling at the local bowling alley or go to our 24 hour diner and just hang out there whenever we’re done doing whatever we have to do.

In your free time what do you like to do?

Having free time is such a big deal, so usually I just watch TV or try and catch up with my friends that are geographically all over the place. I also like to learn new songs on my acoustic guitar and sing and play; I used to be really active in that and played shows when I was younger but now I just have it as my hobby.

What is your fashion style?

I kind of have my own style? It really varies. I have today’s latest affordable fashion but I also am very happy going out every day in jeans and a normal t-shirt. I’m a big fan of plain v-necks.

What do you think of Justin Bieber’s new hair?

Yay no more Bieber hair! Maybe it’ll give young teen girls something else to obsess over that’s more worth their time haha.

Where do you like to shop (in your city?)

I like to shop wherever I can afford it. I like hitting the main stores since there’s all there really is. I’m a big fan of Forever 21, H&M, JCPenney, and Pacsun (I work there when I come back home to Connecticut so I get really good discounts). But honestly, I’m not picky when it comes to stores; if I find something that I like and that’s affordable, I’ll get it.

Your inspiration in life ( eg. live life to the fullest , or a quote)

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind” – Dr. Seuss.

Do you have a profile in any social network (facebook, myspace, linkedin etc)

Facebook is the profile of choice.

Do you have your own blog ?

I do, Tumblr, which I use for everything really. However, I may make a second one if I end up getting accepted for the study abroad program I applied to for studying abroad in Florence, Italy this summer for 12 weeks.

Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?

I gotta go with Timberlake, N’SYNC days and now. He’s so talented and hilarious.
