DJ Inquisitive

‘DJ Inquisitive’ is a name that has taken the local music scene by storm.

A fresh face then in the local club setting some seven years ago, Inquisitive has propelled himself forward and climbed the ranks to dominate the dance floors. In a city so small, his name is one of those forged clearly in the history pages of local music. Being an avid supporter of music genres such as dubstep and electro, I was given the opportunity to have a chat with Leon, where I got to ask him some questions regarding his career in music amongst well, other things.

Why did you decide to call yourself DJ Inquisitive?

Well, I’m always curious and eager for knowledge. There’s actually a long story behind it, but it’s too long to tell here!
Having begun spinning in 2005, how would you describe your style, and how has it evolved over the years?

I have to say it’s pretty diverse… I started out scratching and mixing hip-hop music, now I’m more into producing/mixing electronic music.

You began your DJ career with turntablism, but we’ve heard you are big on
producing tracks now. What made you move towards that?

Turntablism is a skill which one will take years to acquire, and this works the same way for producing tracks. Both take a lot of time and effort. But by producing your own music, it gets your name further and gives you bigger gigs at festivals and such.

Tell us about your monthly feature night, Mad Thrills! How did it begin? Are you planning to take it regional?

When I first joined Zirca, they offered me my own monthly gig. I’ve always wanted my featured night to be a concert experience rather than just a normal clubbing experience. And yes, Mad Thrills will go on a mini tour this August/September!

What are the plans you have for the future? How are you going to take your
music to the next level?

I just have to keep on making music till I hit the jackpot. Right now I’m working on my first full-length album so we’ll see how that goes…

Which DJ would you like to collaborate with, or open for?

Skrillex, Designer Drugs, Porter Robinson

Describe your dressing style.

I dress according to my mood… Mostly street or casual wear.

What do you do when you aren’t DJ-ing?

I love eating Chicken Rice!

Why do you want a pet flamingo?!

Everyone has a dog, cat, and rabbit… I want something that not many people have!

If you could change one thing in your career, what would it be?

Nothing, as everything’s perfect now.

Lastly, any advice for aspiring DJs?

Work hard and don’t let words from others bring you down!

You’ve heard the man; eat lots of chicken rice, covet rare house pets and never give up. DJ Inquisitive can be spotted spinning at Zirca every Wednesday. Remember to look out for his monthly feature night, MAD THRILLS, which will go down on the 29th of this month! See you there.
