Christina Perri: The Story Of An Overnight Success
If Christina Perri has anyone to thank for her newfound fame, it certainly has to be her friend, Keltie Colleen. Two years ago, Christina was working as a café manager in Beverly Hills in the day and recording music in the night, just like so many other hopefuls aiming to make it big in the music industry.
But right now, the Philadelphia songwriter is in the prime of her young (but fruitful) career. She has performed on various television shows and is set to tour with American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz across North America this year. She will be making her stop in Singapore on June 8 at the Kallang Theatre.
So how did she go from waiting tables to international stardom in just two years?
One day, Christina heard from Keltie that she had passed her demo, “Jar of Hearts”, to the So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) choreographer Stacey Tookey. She wrote the song back in 2009, when she had just moved back to Philadelphia from Los Angeles. Stacey loved the song so much she quickly asked for a professional recording of the song, to be used for the June 30 episode of SYTYCD.
For Christina, the miraculous on-screen debut of her song was only a start of things to come. Even without a record deal, “Jar of Hearts” sold 48,000 digital copies, hitting #13 on iTunes, #58 on the “Billboard Hot 100” and reached #23 on the Billboard’s “Hot Digital Songs” chart. The song currently has over 70 million views on YouTube.
Less than two weeks later, Christina debuted live on “The Early Show” on CBS. She proceeded to perform for the July 15 episode of SYTYCD. A week after that, Christina finally signed a deal with Atlantic Records.
Her first and only album to date, “lovestrong.”, was released a year after that, on May 10, and features “Jar of Hearts” and “Arms”, a single which now boasts 12 million views on YouTube.
Christina said of the album, “I looked at the album as a whole piece and the two themes that stood out were love and strength,” she says. “It really titled itself.”
She enjoyed continued success with the single “A Thousand Years”, which was used for the movie “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”. The song has presently sold over a million digital downloads in the US.
With her next album set to come out in 2013, Christina’s career does not look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. Do get your tickets for her June 8 Singapore debut quickly! Whether you’re a fan or not, her soulful voice and raw performance will certainly not fail to impress.
