Big Ben's Pies
In truth, there’re a million peculiar ways as to how I could approach this topic; but I feel that being straightforward right off the bat would be most appropriate: Big Ben’s Pies is phenomenal. I mean really, with a name like “Big Ben’s Pies”; could you expect otherwise?
True to its name, the humble little bakery cum bistro serves a variety of traditional home made English pies. This would also translate to it being definitely infinitely better than the pies sold by the shoddy uncle at your coffeeshop. Underneath their thin crispy crusts, the shortcrust pastries are extremely soft, which for lack of a better expression, melts in your mouth with every bite.
But what attributes to the appeal and success of Big Ben’s Pies isn’t only due to its heavenly pies; it is the entire experience of dining in the bistro. Being a sucker for vintage stylings, I found myself immediately in love with Big Ben’s Pies.
The small space defined itself around a “cottage” theme with its wooden trimmings and wall lamps; complete with seemingly random pictures and drawings, and neat rows of empty bottles lining the top shelves around the bistro. Combined with the fact that it is located in the middle of a rather quiet housing estate, its ambience truly provides for a nice break from bustling Singapore.
Though it could be a little hard to locate, I guarantee that a trip down Big Ben’s Pies will not disappoint. I daresay that having finished my meal, Big Ben’s Pies has set a new standard for pie eating. Personally, I recommend the “Chicken and Mushroom” pie, and if you are lucky enough, give their Pumpkin Soup a try. Never had a liking for pies? Neither did I. But did I enjoy Big Ben’s Pies? I certainly did.
Big Ben’s Pies is located at 15 Swan Lake Ave, Opera Estate Singapore 455711. They will be providing their delicious pies at VERY Wooonderland’s Ashish x Underground event, happening at ION glass house on 9th July!
